UzLiDeP Chairman meets with representatives of the OSCE mission to Uzbekistan

At the end of April this year, a truly historic event, a nationwide referendum on the draft Constitution in a new edition, will take place. It will be held in accordance with the current legislation of Uzbekistan and generally accepted international standards – openly and publicly.

One of the important mechanisms in this process is the institution of observers.

According to the current legislation, based on the accreditation of the Central Election Commission, observers from foreign countries and international organizations, and media representatives have the right to participate in all activities related to the preparation and holding of a referendum in Uzbekistan. At the official invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, the OSCE limited referendum observation mission, which included 10 experts and 14 long-term observers, began its activity in the city of Tashkent.

The mission, based on its functions and mandate, will participate in various events before the referendum, on the day of voting and after it. As is known, meetings with representatives of state authorities, political parties, civil society institutions, the media and the international community are an integral part of the observation.

These days, representatives of the mission, namely, its head, Ambassador Albert Jonsson and political analyst Svetozar Kolibarski, held a meeting at the Executive Committee of the Political Council with UzLiDeP Chairman A. Khaitov, senior officials and activists of the party. International observers got acquainted with the activities of the country’s leading party UzLiDeP within the framework of the referendum.

It was emphasized that the developed draft Constitution in the new edition can be called truly popular. Thus, more than 220,000 proposals were received from citizens of the country as part of the nationwide discussion of the draft Constitution in a new edition. Of these, more than 8 thousand proposals were made by the UzLiDeP party, of which about 3 thousand were submitted directly to the Constitutional Commission, the rest through the portal. Entrepreneurs, businesspeople and farmers, who are the main constituency of the party, made several proposals, in general, supporting the amendments being introduced to the Constitution. The guests were briefly acquainted with the UzLiDeP proposals, which were taken into account in the articles of the draft Constitution in the new edition. All this shows that the people of the country not only took part in the constitutional reform, but are also ready to widely support the draft law in a referendum.

At the meeting, the issue of the UzLiDeP’s contribution to the implementation of explanatory work to bring to the essence of the provisions of the draft Constitution in the new edition was considered. Thus, the quality, consistency and scope of explanatory work is evidenced by the fact that this issue was considered separately at the 12th meeting of the Political Council of UzLiDeP on March 16, 2023. Over the past 2 weeks, on the initiative of the party, more than 1,000 events have already been held, covering about 112,000 citizens of the country.

Following the meeting, an exchange of views took place. The OSCE representatives received answers to their questions regarding the participation of the party in the referendum on the draft Constitution in a new edition.

The meeting was held within the framework of a constructive dialogue.
