Children’s safety to receive stronger legal protection

Today, at a meeting of the UzLiDeP faction, we discussed a draft law aimed at protecting children from all forms of violence. In my view, the importance of this document lies in its design to protect children not only after violence has occurred but also to prevent such cases and strengthen the accountability of perpetrators.

The draft law introduces important provisions aimed at toughening penalties for serious sexual offenses against children, including, in certain cases, the possibility of life imprisonment, and preventing offenders from being released from liability on the grounds that the statute of limitations has expired. This means that a child’s life, dignity, and personal inviolability will receive stronger protection under the law.

Another important aspect concerns the treatment of child victims. It is proposed that questioning be video-recorded, special procedures be applied, a representative of the guardianship and trusteeship authority be present, and state-funded legal assistance be provided. In other words, additional safeguards will be put in place to prevent a child from being subjected to further psychological pressure during criminal proceedings.

At the same time, those responsible for protecting children must not neglect their duties. For this reason, liability is also being introduced for cases such as failing to provide proper care for children and failing to comply with relevant decisions. This approach will strengthen accountability for children’s safety.

I consider this draft law important for protecting children’s lives, health, honor, and dignity. It is also important that the proposals and comments voiced at the faction meeting be taken into account as the draft law is further refined. After all, every child should live in a safe environment and feel protected.
